The Holy Cross Primary School community came together on Wednesday, 20 may for a vibrant and joy-filled Under 8s Day, celebrating the wonder and importance of early childhood.
The morning was made more special by the presence of our wider community, as we welcomed our future Prep 2027 and 2028 families, along with Queensland Fire and Rescue Services, the State Emergency Services and a range of local providers.
Principal, Simon Mahaffy reflected on the significance of the day, sharing that Under 8s Day is about much more than just fun.
"It's a powerful reminder of how vital the early years are in a child's development," he said. "Research consistently shows this is a critical time for learning, growth and laying the foundations for lifelong success."
At the heart of the celebration is a simple but important message: children learn best through play. Throughout the morning, Holy Cross Primary School's youngest learners engaged in a range of hands-on, play-based experiences that encouraged them to explore, imagine and discover. Whether building, creating, role-playing or collaborating with others, these activities nurtured confidence, creativity and essential social skills.

Children delighted in face painting, interactive displays, community stalls and engaging experiences that sparked curiosity and encouraged them to ask questions and try new things. These moments of shared discovery highlight how naturally learning unfolds when children feel safe, supported and inspired.
Under 8s Day also celebrates the strong partnership between school, families and the wider community. It reflects the idea of a 'village' working together to support each child's development, showing that learning extends well ebyond the classroom.

Mr Mahaffy emphasised that Holy Cross's approach to education focuses on nurturing the whole child – academically, socially and emotionally – through meaningful and engaging experiences.
"Events like Under 8s Day provide a wonderful opportunity to see this philosophy in action," he said.
More than anything, the day reminds us that early learning is not simply about preparing children for school. It is about fostering a love of learning, building resilience and creating a strong sense of belonging that will support each child throughout their journey and beyond.
